"When Toyotomi Hideyoshi awarded Tokugawa Ieyasu a domain in the Kanto region, Edo (Tokyo) was a sparsely populated backwater with medieval communities centered on the banks of small rivers. But from the beginning, Ieyasu had ideas about the thriving commercial center it could become. Even before he came to Edo in 1590 Ieyasu sent Okubo Tadakiyo to plan a rudimentary water system draining down small rivers near the castle. "

The River Society Overview: The Indus did not have specific writing but there were about 20 to 30 symbols which we cannot understand. The Shang Dynasty used some kids of the written characters.

The Place Overview: We are going to talk about the Place characteristics of language, government, communication, and transportation as we saw them in Fuchu. It is connected to a Place in a human physical way.  Right now we have an emperor and his name is Akahito, but the person who runs the government is , the prime minister.  He does all the work and makes big decisions and the emperor is very old and usually stands on the balcony and waves his hand. Now, the Japanese castle is surrounded by moats and it is in downtown Tokyo. The current language here in Fuchu is Japanese and English.  Itís mostly Japanese because there are thousands of Japanese in Japan and most speak Japanese.  But there are some people that speak English in Japan.  And, Fuchu is an important part of Japan. Transportation is much different from long ago.  Now many people go on trains, cars, motorbikes, subways, and walking and biking.  Not many people we saw go on scooters or rollerblades.  A couple of times, we saw people skateboarding. But mostly, we have seen people going in cars, bikes, and walking.  I think most people do those because it is easy to do and it is fast. Trains and subways are fast, and all, but you have to pay for a ticket. The same as a bus. Many people walk and bike because it is a good way to get exercise.
