Quality of Life and Status

The Nomads

The main question this group answered was, "Are what gives status to the people at Graded the same as what gives status to people in Brazil?" which was a modification of this core society question, "What are the most powerful and important organizations (formal or informal) in this society?"

After weeks of research, we found out that what gives status to people in Graded really doesn’t match what gives status in Brazil. The people at Graded do not vote for the same people in Brazil because they study, they research and they are connected to the media and so that they really know who is the best for them to vote for. The poorer people voted for Lula because he promises a lot to them. For instance, the Bolsa Familia, where Lula said that he would give poor families money to help them out with food and clothing. But he only gave thirty-five reais to each family which is only like fifteen dollars. Brazil is divided into two parts in their voting- the Northern and the Southern. The Northern votes for Lula because it is his region and it is a poorer region. The Southern part is richer and they feel like Alckmin would help them. What gives status in people in Graded and the poor people in the favelas is also not the same. The values and needs are different. The people in the favelas have to work hard to get one real while the people at Graded use one real to buy two pencils. The people in the favelas work to buy food, housing and medicine. The people at Graded do but they have enough to buy that and much more. Graded people are not desperate! There seems to be more drinking and violence in the favelas. Graded is very different from the Brazilian society. They do not match.
